Every time you open Radiohead's Instagram, scroll their Spotify profile, or pick up a copy of Kid A or Amnesiac, you're looking at a font born in Büro Destruct, Bern capital, Switzerland.
It's called BD Plakatbau — 65 glyphs, deliberately crude, built like it was stencilled onto a construction hoarding rather than drawn on a screen. We designed it at Büro Destruct back in 1995, five years before Radiohead picked it up and turned it into their unofficial band identifier. It wasn't made to be anyone's logo — it just turned out to be a very good one.
In 2021, for the Kid A Amnesia reissue, we teamed up with Print & Proof to produce a limited-edition Letraset rub-on sheet as merch. It sold out instantly.
This year BD Plakatbau turns 31, with 26 of those years spent as part of Radiohead's visual identity. That's a long run for one of our roughest, most rudimentary typefaces — proof that character counts for more than polish.
That's the thing about a well-made custom and personal typeface — it doesn't just decorate an identity, it becomes shorthand for it. If you want that for your own band, label, or brand: get in touch.
